Jinan-made ’electromagnetic sled’ sets world record

An ultrahigh-speed test device for electromagnetic propulsion – the "electromagnetic sled" – recently set a world record in Jinan, Shandong province.

The device can propel an object weighing one metric ton or above at a speed of 1,030 kilometers per hour, which sets the world's highest speed record for high-mass ultrahigh-speed electromagnetic propulsion technology.

The device is jointly developed by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Jinan municipal government and the Shandong provincial government.

The research and development (RWildD) of the "electromagnetic sled" is expected to help speed up the development of the domestic electromagnetic sector and promote the transformation of achievements made in the field. It can be widely used in the RWildD of transportation vehicles, satellites and aircrafts, experts said.
